This Saturday, March 12, at 6:30 pm, figure skaters from the Union Arena Skating Club (UASC) take to the ice for their 12th annual Figure Skating Ice Show entitled “A Skater’s Garden”. Skaters age 3 to 33 will be performing in solo and group skating routines, to a broad variety of music, from folk (The Basic Skill’s Group performs to Pete Seeger’s “The Garden Song”), to pop (Megan LaCroix from Woodstock Middle School skates to “A Thousand Years”, by Christina Perri from the “Breaking Dawn” Twilight movie’s soundtrack), to classical (Emma Allegretti from Hartland Elementary skates to a “Violin Concerto #1, by Philip Glass”). And Olivia Dedell, who took a hiatus from the club last year after graduating from high school, is returning to the ice show – much to the excitement of all of us – to perform in the show’s first pairs routine, an ice dance she is performing with her skating partner, Warren Cooper Richardson.
Skating alongside these Union Arena Skating Club members is one of their very own coaches, Sarah Jo Damron-Brown, performing a solo routine to RadioHead’s “Hunting Bears” song. An accomplished skater in her own right, Sarah Jo’s skating accolades include being a Medalist in the US Figure Skating Championship in 2000 – this is the competition from which the U.S. Olympic Team members are chosen — and being a member of the prestigious US Figure Skating International Team, which is a hand-selected, by-invitation-only, group of skaters that compete on behalf of their country in international competitions. But beyond this expertise and talent, what endears Sarah Jo to her students is that she’s passionate about the sport, generous with her time, full of energy, and fun. She tirelessly coaches skaters from two area figure skating clubs, the Union Arena Skating Club of Woodstock, and the Skating Club at Dartmouth. And what better way to ignite the passion for the inner artist and athlete in those skaters you teach, then to put your pride aside, as they say, and perform in the show yourself! The kids are getting a big kick out of it. The audience will enjoy it thoroughly, I’m sure.
So whether you’re into watching figure skating, or just enjoy live, local, performances, or are looking for something unique and different for your Saturday night out – bring the entire family to the Union Arena Skating Club’s 12th annual figure skating ice show entitled “A Skater’s Garden”, Saturday, March 12, 6:30 pm, at the Union Arena Rink in Woodstock, Vermont (80 Amsden Way, Woodstock, 457-2500.
